About Candace:
http://www.sistercandace.com/
Born in Pittsburgh into a creative family who nurtured her energetic personality early on. She earned her first starring role on stage by five years old. Candace grew up performing in churches and with Visionary Academy of Performing Arts. Through schools and summer programs in Pittsburgh, Candace learned everything about stage presence and creative writing. She became a married teenage mother in her senior year of school and began her adult life nursing while attending Duquesne University full time for journalism.
In 2011, during her North Side adult corporate experiences, Candace was casually introduced to the Pittsburgh poetry scene through her Sister Bridgette Perdue who agreed to care for her son while she entered her first poetry slam. After her 2nd round loss, a poet sister asked for her contact information and thus began her spiritual learning journey through the arts.
She began studying Ancient African Information as well as performing at the Shadow Lounge, August Wilson Center, Steel City Poetry Slams, out of state slams, National Talent Competitions, and in Theatrical Productions.
Her adult career in performing arts was initiated as the stage name of Hotep the Artist in 2011. Hotep is the vibration (or word) for Peace. Imhotep is the name of the Multi-disciplinary Ancient Egyptian Ancestor who contributed so much to Humanity in his time.
Candace left her corporate job in 2013 and began her journey as an independent artist. She immediately began writing and winning a grant from the Pittsburgh Foundation and Heinz Endowments in 2014. With it, she produced her first One Woman Show "Hotep On Earth" the following Spring. From there she began creating events and was hired as a teaching artist in schools.
